Job Summary: The Open Heart Surgical Assistant performs a variety of duties and procedures as incident to the surgical procedure as designated by the surgeon and consistent with their individual credentials. The surgical assistant practices under the supervision of the surgeon during the intraoperative phase of the perioperative experience. The surgical assistant must have obtained the training and ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon and other team members such as perfusion and anesthesia with respect to the particular surgical procedure.
Responsible for working in a safe and protective manner at all times keeping in mind that safety and environmental hazards are the responsibility of all employees for themselves, other staff members and patients.
Determines specific equipment needed per procedure.
Reviews surgical permit to confirm procedure and identify special needs.
Drapes the patient within the surgeon’s guidelines.
Provides retraction of tissue and organs for optimal visualization by the surgeon.
Assists in maintaining hemostasis by direct pressure, using and applying appropriate surgical instruments for the task.
Maintains integrity of the sterile field.
Assists in resuscitation of patient during cardiac arrest or other life threatening events in the OR.
Performs other duties and procedures as directed by the surgeon and in accordance with their individual credentials.
Minimum Requirements: Must have one of the following credentials:
(CFA) Certified first assist, (CST) certified surgical tech with 3 years’ experience in the specialty (certification must be obtained in the first year of employment if not already a CST),
(RNFA) RN first assist, (PA-C) physician assistant with specific training or RN with 3 years’ experience in surgical assisting .
BLS & ACLS Provider credentialed from the American Heart Association (AHA).
