Christiana Care is currently offering a Paid Sterile Processing Internship Training Program. After successful completion of the CCHS program, you will be placed into a Full Time Sterile Processing Technician position. The assigned shift as SPD Technician will be determined based on unit needs (day, evening, or midnight) and may be at either the Christiana or Wilmington location.
PRIMARY FUNCTION: To learn all appropriate processes and demonstrate basic knowledge concerning cleaning, inspecting, sterilization and decontamination of instruments for the Operating Room and other ancillary departments.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
-Completes all class work and assignments demonstrating active learning and involvement. -Successfully passes all learning module examinations and maintains class attendance. -Actively participates in precepted learning experiences in all areas of Sterile Processing. -Demonstrates understanding of aseptic technique and sterilization parameters. -Demonstrates appropriate knowledge and entry level technical skills in the following areas: -All types of instrument decontamination procedures -Operation of all types of cleaning and sterilization equipment. -Identification of all surgical instruments and understanding of instrument use and maintenance. -Assembling instruments into their assigned trays according to instrument tray list by configuration and number. -Use of appropriate biological indicators in the sterilization process, adhering to quality control requirements. -Ability to wrap and label items properly for steam, Sterrad and gas sterilization. -Assembling case carts for surgical procedures using the appropriate picklist. -Documentation in the electronic instrument documentation system -Communicates effectively with employees, patients, and visitors. -Works constructively with other members of the health care team. -Responds to emergency situations by notifying appropriate person and taking direction from the appropriate person. -Compliance with mandatory education requirements and mandatory tests by time given. -Maintains an attitude of helpfulness, courtesy, and cooperation toward others. -Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices. -Reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors. -Performs other duties as directed.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: -Must receive national CS/SPD Certification within one year of completing internship program.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, routinely lift up to 25 pounds with occasionally lifting up to 45 pounds, push and/or pull 45 pounds, carry, reach, twist, handle, stoop, climb, as per unit based Physical Demands Checklist. No color blindness. Vision corrected to 20/30. Other medical conditions on case by case bases.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Frequent exposure to biological elements with occasional exposure to chemicals, machinery noise and other environmental elements.
There is a two year work commitment agreement with Christiana Care Health System in the Sterile Processing Department at the end of the program completion. There is a $5000 payback obligation if the work commitment is not filled.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
-High school graduate or equivalent and/or equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted -Reading proficiency and computer literacy also required -Completion of a previous Sterile Processing course is Required
