What You Will Do:
Under general supervision, the Sterile Processing Tech will prepare, sterilize, store and issue medical/surgical instruments, supplies and equipment in accordance with departmental, hospital and established policies and procedures.
Inspects instruments for cleanliness and proper functionality; Assembles instrument trays and sets in accordance with specific requirements; Packages and labels instrumentation for terminal sterilization in accordance with established practices and standards.
Performs terminal sterilization activities utilizing steam, plasma and related sterilization equipment; May perform routine maintenance and minor repair of equipment, as needed; Monitors the sterilization process using mechanical, chemical and biological indicators
Cleans and restocks specialty equipment and carts as appropriate, in accordance with departmental procedures.
Dispenses and delivers instruments and equipment to nursing departments and clinics, maintaining an accurate record of supplies for use and availability and restocks inventory as needed
Performs decontamination activities including diluting chemicals, operating mechanic equipment to render supplies clean and using safe handling methods to prevent injury.
Performs routine cleaning activities to ensure a clean work environment and prevent internal cross-contamination.
Assists with retrieval of contaminated instrument sets from patient care areas for sterile processing; Practices proper techniques in the containment and handling of contaminated instruments, supplies and equipment to prevent cross-contamination
Communicates effectively with all customers to render service and to resolve problems. Refers difficult issues to the Central Sterile Processing Supervisor for resolution.
Observes appropriate handling and safety standards throughout the entire sterilization process in accordance with governing regulations and UMMS standards.
Attends all mandatory hospital and department in-service training and safety training annually. Attends a minimum of one external educational seminar per year.
What You Need to Be Successful:
High School Diploma or equivalent (GED)
Certification as Sterile Processing Technician
One year Central Sterile Processing Technician experience
