Performs patient specimen analysis for diagnostic purposes, under the direct supervision of a medical technologist. Enters all results into the computer system. Brings panic value test results to the attention of the medical technologist and/or pathologist. Responsible for cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing various equipment and work areas in the laboratory. Maintains laboratory inventory. Department responsibilities will be assigned when justified by competence and judgment factors under the supervision of a medical technologist. Based on competence will process specimens in hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, microbiology, and the blood bank.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs routine and stat laboratory assays.
Performs qualitative urine analysis; color, clarity, specific gravity.
Performs blood bank duties, based on experience and education, with results reviewed by the medical technologist.
Demonstrates knowledge of expected lab results for the infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient. Makes medical technologist and/or pathologist aware of abnormal results, panic values.
Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
Follows standard precautions at all times.
Operates and maintains equipment correctly and safely, including calibration of instruments.
Cleans laboratory glassware, sinks, and workbenches using appropriate solvents, brushes and cloths.
Uses hospital approved disinfectants for cleaning.
Uses a simplified balance to weigh chemicals.
Responsible for inventory of reagents and supplies in the laboratory, reports needed supplies to the Chief Technologist.
Initiates the meeting of responsibilities without prompting.
Demonstrates the values of team concept on a consistent basis.
Communicates verbally in a clear and concise manner.
Submits suggestions to improve the laboratory's efficiency.
Interacts with laboratory personnel in a professional manner.
Performs clerical work; is able to input and retrieve lab results in the computer system.
Demonstrates the ability to deal with pressure to meet deadlines, to be accurate, and to handle constantly changing situations.
Demonstrates the ability to deal with a variety of people, deal with stressful situations, and handle conflict.
Meets dress code standards, appearance is neat and clean.
Completes annual educational requirements.

Reports to work on time and as scheduled; completes work within designated time.
Wears identification while on duty; uses computerized punch time system correctly.
Completes in-services and returns in a timely fashion.
Attends annual review and departmental in-services, as scheduled.
Attends department staff meetings as required within the department.
Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the hospital, as well the focus statement of the department.
High school graduate or equivalent.
Associates Degree in Science.
Montana Certification/Licensure as a Medical Technician.
