Job Summary
UT Southwestern has an opening for the position of Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist within our Department of Ophthalmology. Our Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist will be responsible for assisting ophthalmologists in diagnoses and treatment of eye diseases and injuries as well as other clinical duties.
Experience and Education
Bachelor's Degree in Science or related field, and successful completion of accredited ophthalmic medical assistant program, certification as Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist by Joint Commission of Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO, or CAHEA), and two (2) years relevant experience.
Job Duties
Assists ophthalmologists in diagnoses and treatment of eye diseases and injuries.
Conducts variety of preliminary eye examinations.
Performs retinoscopy and any and all fundus photography which includes confocal.
Performs keratometry and ultrasound for diagnosis and intraocular lens calculations. Takes refractory readings and fits patients for contact lenses.
Examines patients for symptoms indicative of organic or congenital disorders. Performs various diagnostic testing procedures to determine vision loss.
Coordinates remedial activities to aid in regaining vision or to utilize sight remaining. Demonstrates therapeutic eye exercises to patients.
Conducts intensive clinical training and provides working supervision of ophthalmic technicians.
Assists in coordination of maintenance of equipment and instruments used in clinic.
Duties performed may include one or more of the following core functions: (a) Directly interacting with or caring for patients; (b) Directly interacting with or caring for human-subjects research participants; (c) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting patient records (including patient financial records); or (d) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting human-subjects research records.
Performs other duties as assigned.
