The Durham VA Medical Center, Durham, NC has an immediate opening for (1) Temporary Full-Time NTE 1 year as a Medical Instrument Technician (Pulmonary Function) to work within the Medicine Service. Medical Instrument Technicians (Pulmonary) are primarily responsible for ensuring respiratory equipment, e.g. ventilators, CPAP/BiPAP machines, and related items, are cleaned, setup, tested, and returned to service availability in support of respiratory care activities. MIT staff also ensure respiratory supply points in the ICUs and on the floors are kept clean and stocked with necessary items. In addition to the above respiratory duties, MIT staff operate ECG machines to provide off-tour ECG support to the Medical Center. PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Plans and provides patient care that is safe, compassionate, and consistent with established patient care standards. 2. Under the direction of a respiratory therapist, sets up oxygen and other gas therapy, humidity and aerosol therapy utilizing various delivery devices, e.g. nasal cannula, face mask and face tent. 3. Performs 12-lead electrocardiograms (ECG) and rhythm strips on multi-channel and single channel ECG equipment to assess patients for cardiac arrhythmias. 4. Identifies serious acute abnormalities of ECG's and pulse oximetry, e.g. serious rhythm disturbances, desaturations of oxygen, and notifies the nurse caring for the patient, the respiratory therapist on duty, and/or the patient's physician. 5. Consults with the respiratory therapist on duty and/or the physician in the event of adverse reactions to therapy. 6. Assists with emergency airway management to include cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required. 7. Inspects and tests respiratory care equipment to ensure equipment is functioning safely and efficiently. 8. Performs minor maintenance, quality control checks, and cleaning of respiratory equipment to ensure adequate availability. 9. Monitors supply inventory and restocks equipment/supplies as required. 10. Monitors patient oxygen use and documents in appropriate department system. 11. Documents procedure/therapy performed in department record keeping system. 12. Performs other assigned duties as determined by the Technical Director, Respiratory Care Section.
