The histology section lead evaluates Histology section activities to assess ongoing day to day compliance with established protocols and guidelines. The incumbent develops and recommends policy and procedures regarding Anatomic Pathology (Histology). Provides authoritative advise and consultation in the Histology section as they apply to the Anatomic Pathology laboratory. Major duties include but are limited to: Receives all requests and specimens for testing into the laboratory. Verifies the accuracy and completeness of the request and proper sample submission. Properly identifies all specimens. Verifies discrepancies with the provider. Accessions all specimens into the hospital computer system. Is responsible for embedding tissue of all sizes in the proper manner for correct sectioning. Is able to operate the microtome to achieve tissue sections of the thickness requested by the pathologist. Performs routine, special stains, and immunohistochemistry stains as requested by the pathologist. Correctly coverslips preparations so that there are no bubbles produced. Can ascertain the correct fixation techniques that are non-routine such as kidney biopsies, skin biopsies for Immunofluorescence and skin biopsies for neuropathy. Performs frozen section preparations. Frozen section preparation includes freezing the unfixed specimen; sectioning it with a cryostat microtome and staining and coverslipping the slide. Prepares specimens for cytological exam using filter preparations and blocks. Uses the cytospin centrifuge for fluid preparations. Performs cytologic stains and determines the quality of staining. Performs staining of tissue sections, including histochemical staining techniques. Assists the pathologist during specimen collection of fine needle aspirations. S/he prepares specialized touch preparations and aspirate smears in accordance with protocol. The incumbent transcribes gross dictation from pathologists.
