This supervisor position will have oversight of Laboratory Care Technician team members and operational oversight of inpatient collections and specimen processing.
The Technical Supervisor has direct responsibilities for the technical operation of a laboratory or a laboratory section. The responsibilities include the supervision of employees in collaboration with laboratory managers and medical directors. This position will lead a diverse team of phlebotomists and technical staff in the laboratory ensuring efficient workflow. The Technical Supervisor assures the provision of accurate testing which best meets the customer expectations in a cost-effective manner.
Provides daily supervision of the laboratory or laboratory section:
Supervises employees in collaboration with laboratory manager and medical director.
Directs work flow.
Provides leadership in team building and conflict management.
Promotes open and effective lines of communication within the work group, with other hospital/clinic departments, FV hospital entities, FV clinics, medical staff and external sources.
Assumes responsibility for the technical operations of the lab(s) or lab section(s):
Supervises overall operation and technical activities of the laboratory.
Directs work flow in the daily operation of a laboratory section and provide direction and problem solving skills for laboratory functions.
Oversees the performance of method development research, instrument correlation, and method validation.
Assures the performance of accurate testing.
Performs waived, moderate or high complexity testing as defined by CLIA 88.
Working technical supervisor that splits time between bench work and administration.
Oversees and/or performs laboratory information systems functions; ensures that change requests are communicated to LIS and that changes are implemented once made.
Participates in and /or facilitates system standardization teams.
Participates in planning and financial management for the lab or lab section:
Assists in planning for future developments including changes in staffing, workload, computer, space, equipment, and staff education.
Collaborates with the manager in the preparation of the annual operating and capital budgets.
Assists the manager in resolving budget discrepancies.
Evaluates testing results for accuracy and appropriate intervention.
Acts as a laboratory resource for the correlation of data, based on clinical knowledge, technical expertise, and other condition affecting test results.
Determines and supervises appropriate action to recheck abnormal, discrepant, or unexpected results.
Directly communicates abnormal and critical results to care giver and obtains information from caregivers to resolve reasons for incongruent results (physiologic or methodologic).
Supervises laboratory activities in Laboratory Quality Assurance, Performance Improvement and Laboratory Compliance Programs.
Supervises the preparation of the lab section for inspection by accrediting agencies and carries out activities to insure compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements.
Develops, implements, or contributes to the development and implementation of quality monitors and performance improvement activities.
Assumes overall responsibility for quality control; serves as resource for QC questions and problems.
Orients and mentors new employees.
Orients individuals in routine and complex testing methodology, instrumentation, and information systems.
Responsible for monitoring and documenting the progress of the orientation and training.
Develops learning plans.
Provides informal daily constructive feedback to all staff.
Provides formal feedback and goal setting as part of written evaluations and conferences (FPP).
Re-evaluates staff progress toward goals during the course of the year.
Demonstrates ability to provide care or service adjusting approaches to reflect developmental level of population served.
Partners with patient/care-giver in care/decision making.
Communicates in a respectful manner.
Ensures a safe, secure environment.
Individualizes plan of care to meet patient needs.
Modifies clinical interventions based on population served.
Provides patient education based on an assessment of learning needs of patient/care-giver.
Bachelors in a related laboratory field including the related lab practicum or equivalent routes as specified in CLIA 88.
Possess appropriate HHS approved laboratory certification (ASCP or AMT). HEW certification is also recognized.
Two years' experience as a MLS/MT
Prefer BS in Medical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology
Three to Five Years as MLS/MT
