Purpose of the position is to provide administrative and customer service support for the VA hospital food service program. The incumbent performs routine duties that require exceptional customer service, computer skills, proper phone etiquette, proficiency in special food service and therapeutic diet procedures, a broad knowledge of routine modified diets, combinations of diet modifications and knowledge of Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) Dietetics software and required functions. The Health Technician (Dietetic) duties consist of but are not limited to the following: Interviews patients to obtain and review food preferences. Enters food allergies, diet tolerances and religious and/or cultural food restrictions into the computer after consulting with the appropriate dietitian and/or dietetic technician. Assists patients and residents in the menu selection process. Visits, calls, or sees appropriate patients and residents to obtain meal selections. Assists patients/residents in menu selection entry into the Get Well Network system; educates and teaches patients how to utilize the Get Well Network bedside meal ordering system. Checks patient and resident tray tickets and room service orders to make sure selections are correct and appropriate for the Veterans' diet. Processes diet and nourishment order information and requests initial and subsequent changes via computer Adjusts tray tickets, nourishments or supplemental feedings via computer after discussion with dietitian or dietetic technician. Coordinates the late tray procedure with WG-4 employee and/or First Line Supervisor to assure that patients and residents receive their trays within a timely manner. Monitors assigned ward nourishments refrigerators and their checkpoint temperatures daily; monitors refrigerators for cleanliness. Reports malfunctioning refrigerator to appropriate ward staff and Nutrition & Food Services supervisor. Checks dates on items in refrigerator, discards outdated items, and adjusts bulk and individual nourishments as appropriate to minimize waste. Completes monthly performance improvement monitors including patient satisfaction surveys, sample trays, plate waste studies, tray accuracies and other monitors as needed. Provides training to same or lower-grade employees on responsibilities within Health Technician position when asked by supervisor.
