The GS-9 Medical Technologist at this level is responsible for testing procedures that are performed on a variety of biological specimens and/or environmental samples using manual or automated techniques, and require a broad exercise of independent judgment and responsibility with minimal technical supervision. The North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System consists of two medical centers, three large multi-specialty outpatient clinics and eight small community-based primary care outpatient clinics. The Malcom Randall VA Medical Center in Gainesville is a tertiary care facility, identified as the most complex VA health care system, that is also an active teaching hospital, with an extensive array of specialty services. The Malcom Randall VA Medical Center combines a full range of patient care services with state-of-the-art technology that is enhanced and supported through education and research. Affiliations: The North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System has a strong and meaningful affiliation with the University of Florida College of Medicine. The Malcom Randall VA Medical Center is connected both physically and functionally to the University. Over 2,000 residents, interns, and students are trained in the North Florida/South Georgia system each year. Programs are also in place with the University of Florida for dentistry, nursing, physical therapy, health services administration, and pharmacy. Other affiliations are in place with Florida State University, Valdosta State University, Santa Fe Community College, and Lake City Community College for programs in nursing, social work, physical therapy, medical technology, and health care administration. Through sharing agreements, there is collaboration in the areas of radiation therapy, professional radiology services, sleep lab, electron microscopy, and cardiac catheterization. Major Duties include, but are not limited to: Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory quality control and assurance procedures and principles of performance improvement in order to manage reagent and supply inventories and document control systems. Knowledge of laboratory equipment and ability to maintain, troubleshoot and repair instrumentation. Ability to communicate, consult and interact with other members of the healthcare team, external relations, customer service and patient education. Skilled in informatics, laboratory data flow and the understanding of laboratory processes. Maintains, calibrates, cleans, and repairs equipment and instruments. Documents those tasks and immediately informs Supervisors, Laboratory Directors, or Pathologists of any problems. Performs a broad range of laboratory procedures including testing and tasks of the medical laboratory technologist occupation in the Laboratory Department which includes the sections of Chemistry, Immunochemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Serology, Blood Bank, and limited Microbiology. Processes specimens using equipment necessary to prepare them for specific culture and microscopic analyses, controls physical conditions, and responds to time factors to insure that the physiological state of the specimen is maintained. Calibrates, standardizes, adjusts and maintains laboratory instruments. Verifies correct instrument operation using established procedures, and quality control checks. Identifies the cause of common problems and makes simple repairs. Advises on course of action to follow when values obtained from standard control sample values, or proficiency test programs are unacceptable. Examines functions of instruments, rechecks conditions of test performance, evaluates reaction system and/or procedural techniques used, and identifies function with symptoms. Ability to use independent technical judgment to analyze and interpret laboratory results. Ability to interpret and apply complex written instructions. Ability to communicate, consults, and interacts with other members of the healthcare team, external relations, customer service, and patient education Work Schedule: Monday- Friday, Day or Night Shift available, May include weekends & holidays Note: Work schedules are determined and approved by the supervisor.
