The incumbent works in the central processing (CP) and/or anatomic pathology (AP) office performing specimen processing, referral lab send-outs, phlebotomy and rapid test procedures. Testing procedures are performed on a variety of biological specimens and/or environmental samples using manual or automated techniques, and require a broad exercise of independent judgment and responsibility with minimal technical supervision. Receives specimens submitted for clinical or pathologic examination and evaluates the acceptability of each specimen, documents discrepancies and resolves potential problems. Acknowledges specimens received from inside and outside locations in the LIS system, verifying pertinent information as detailed in the SOP. The incumbent utilizes centrifuges, automated processors, automated histology equipment; refrigerators and freezers as well as recording maintenance data and temperature readings in the appropriate log/chart. The incumbent measures the volume of and/or weighs specimens as required. The duties include, but are not limited to: Performs work involving tests and examinations using the techniques of clinical laboratory practice in one or more specialized areas; Uses established cleaning and safety procedures and manuals for the operation, maintenance and interim repair of applicable manual or automated equipment (Power Processor or similar systems) used during their work; Keeps inventory of consumables, supplies and reagents and notifies superiors when levels of same are low and need to be ordered; Assists in training newly hired staff, medical students, residents and/or other staff who are orienting to the CP and/or AP processing areas of the laboratory; Correlates quantitative data with patient data (i.e., history, medications) to verify results if deviations from standard practice and/or critical values are obtained; and Adheres to all applicable regulatory requirements of a CAP certified clinical lab and P&LMS policies and procedures for quality assurance and competency as well as continuing education requirements for Clinical Laboratory Scientists.
