The incumbent serves as a Medical Technician in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service at the VA Caribbean Healthcare performing multiple tasks and other duties classified as simple to complex at San Juan Veterans Affairs Healthcare System. Major duties include: Collects and processes blood and body fluid specimens. Reviews laboratory orders and verifies that the proper tubes and used and the correct amount of blood is drawn. Accepts and accessions laboratory order into the Computer System and label all tubes with the patient's information.. Collect blood cultures using aseptic techniques. Provide verbal and/or written instructions to patients of Semen Analysis Collections, Urine Cytology Collections, 24 hrs Timed Urines test, collection of stool specimens (for ova and parasites, culture and sensitive, occult bloods), etc. Processes all specimens according to strict laboratory guidelines/policies to assure specimen integrity. Assist in teaching laboratory and clinic personnel/student theoretical and practical aspects of phlebotomy, specimen collection and specimen requirements. Duties require that the incumbent be familiar with VISTA,CPRS, CPRS Contingency and VISTARO computer systems. Functions as a resource person and troubleshooter for clinic personnel in executing Vista order entry and results options. Prints out appointment list for the lab clinics. Reviews orders in CPRS to ensure that all necessary orders are drawn.
