Columbia is the geographic center of South Carolina, with easy access to mountains (two hours west) and nationally recognized beach resorts (two hours east). The Surgical Technician is a member of the surgical team and provides assistance to the surgeon and other members during surgical procedures. The incumbent participates with the surgical team members in planning and implementing complex procedures under the general supervision of the surgeon and registered nurse. Duties include but may not be limited to the following: Functions as a primary scrub person responsible for handling surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment during all surgical procedures. Prepares, organizes, and maintains highly complex sterile surgical set-ups. Observes and responds promptly to each stage of the surgical procedure and anticipates the needs of the surgeon by maintaining a high level of concentration for extended periods of time. Sets up sterile field; identifies, assembles, handles, manages, and operates specialized complex medical equipment such as microscopes, lasers, urologic equipment, recording devices and other operating room supplies and equipment; recognizes potentially hazardous situations and takes corrective actions. Utilizes universal precautions and follows all infection control policies and procedures when handling specimens, supplies and equipment. Collaborates with the RN and other staff members to perform sponge and instrument counts to for the accountability. Responsible for surgical team to develop and implement a surgical procedure plan of care to assure all necessary surgical supplies, instruments and equipment are available prior to the surgical procedure. Inspects and performs all recommended tests to assure that equipment meets operational, sterilization and/or cleanliness requirements. Assumes responsibility for the accountability of all surgical instruments and equipment during the surgical procedure; functions as a second circulator for complex surgical procedures. Assists in training residents, medical students, nursing students, operating room technology students, and new OR staff in the operation of equipment, sterile technique, handling of instruments, and OR procedures to include the scrub role in surgical procedures. Performs other duties as directed/assigned by supervisor. Work Schedule: AM SHIFT 0700-1530 hrs.- ON CALL after 1530 hrs. Monday - Friday and Weekend Calls.
