These positions are located within the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service at the Veterans Affairs Boston Health Care System, MA (one position located in West Roxbury, MA and one position located in Boston, MA). The Medical Technician - Laboratory is responsible for performing pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical processes in the laboratory. ***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: Performs all aspects of specimen processing; Procures specimens from patients in a timely and efficient manner; Appropriately handles, accessions, processes and critically evaluates the acceptability of each specimen for testing, or packaging for send-out testing; Ensures a wait time of less than 15 minutes for patient draws; Maintains supplies and organizes a timely flow of specimens for testing; Performs work in the clinical laboratory involving pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical stages using perfected laboratory techniques in chemistry, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis and microbiology; Documents discrepancies and uses problem solving skills to resolve potential problems; Utilizes laboratory equipment including centrifuges, automated processors, refrigerators and freezers; Performs phlebotomy by venipuncture or micro-technique; and Performs other related duties as assigned. Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
