This position is located at the Cheyenne VA Health Care System in Cheyenne, Wyoming in the Radiology Department operating under the direction of the Radiology Service Chief as Chief Radiologic Technologist managing and supervising the Radiology Department with full responsibility over the technical and administrative aspects, quality management and patient care functions within the Service. In this position you have direct supervisory responsibility over the General Radiography, Computerized Tomography (CT), Ultrasound (US), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), and Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS) services to include over the Assistant DAT Chief, the PACS Administrator, and technologists within Ultrasound, CT, MRI, and X-Ray, and provides general supervision to all non-direct reports within the Radiology Department. Also expected to perform an acting role from time to time when the Radiology Service Chief is otherwise unavailable due to sickness, leave or vacancy. Duties Include but not limited to: Responsibility for directing and managing all areas of the Radiology Department. Directly supervises, evaluates and directs work performance of his/her direct reports as well as general supervision and support of the Radiology Department across all locations. Coordinates and manages all aspects of the Radiology Department to achieve optimal utilization of the available resources to include scheduling, funding, space, equipment, and support purchases. This requires coordination of activities between local clinical managers, medical center leadership, VISN leadership, and VACO. Coordinates the patient flow through service agreements with other departments (OR, ER, ICU etc.) to meet the imaging needs of other services in the facility. Plans work schedules to assure an even flow and distribution of work; explains work requirements and assigns work on a daily and weekly basis, accounting for weekend and evening shifts (if necessary); sets deadlines and priorities; develops operating instructions; identifies equipment requirements; recommends methods to improve work quality and productivity; reviews the work in progress or upon completion by spot checking, as appropriate. Directs on-the-job training for employees and provides back-up skills by cross training. Confers with radiologists to develop standard and non-standard exam protocols. Advises employees of the performance requirements of their positions, keeps them informed of their progress in meeting the requirements, and prepares formal evaluations of employee performance. Assigns work based on priorities, consideration of difficulty and requirements of assignments, and capabilities of employees. Decides on training needs and training requests related to employees and implements accordingly. Makes decisions on work problems presented by facility supervisors, administrators, facility team leaders, similar personnel, and contractors. Provides advice, counsel, or instruction to employees on both clinical and administrative matters. Follows established Quality Assurance (QA) guidelines and protocols to ensure integrity, availability, authenticity and confidentiality of imaging data transmitted by the various modalities. This requires personally previewing imaging coming from modalities prior to storage in the PACS archive. Communicates in a professional and cooperative manner to be able to work with other employees and service lines. Keeps abreast of current published material pertinent to position in order to keep pace with the rapid growth and technological changes occurring in the field of radiology. Responsible for managing staff resources to accomplish the needs of the Medical Center taking into consideration factors such as staffing levels, staff retention, budget, strategic planning, staff productivity, etc. The incumbent pursues data driven decisions using benchmarking, time-motion studies, and other measurable factors to assess outcomes. Assigns work based on priorities, consideration of difficulty, and requirements of assignments, and capabilities of employees. Maintains and reviews daily performance metrics in scheduling (Pending, Hold, Scheduled, Past Scheduled lists) and timely performance of imaging studies, regular monitoring of quality metrics including repeat examinations, dose alerts and critical result reporting, assuring completion of required audits, obtaining and incorporating outside imaging studies and reports into the VA electronic medical records, etc. Responsible for management of human resources for the Radiology Department including selection, promotion, performance appraisal, and award and promotion systems. Responsible for the technical aspect of radiologic equipment operation and safety and for carrying out the recommendations of the Radiation Safety Committee to the evaluation and recommendation of equipment purchase. Participates in quality performance/improvement activities and ensures compliance with JCAHO requirements for activities under his/her area of responsibility. Incumbent will ensure productivity is maintained at the established level for the program for which he/she is responsible.
