The Medical Technician serves as a Phlebotomist and is responsible for collecting a broad range of routine and emergency blood samples on inpatients and outpatients within the VISN 12 Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service at Jesse Brown VA Medical Center in Chicago, IL. The position requires a high level of contact with patients. DUTIES INCLUDE: Performs phlebotomy procedures following a sequence of steps approved for sample collection. Receives requests for testing and specimens into the laboratory and verifies the accuracy and completeness of the request. Receives all specimens that are sent to commercial reference laboratories for testing. Identifies unusual conditions and discrepancies that may cause erroneous test results. Makes sound decisions independently, and takes appropriate action to correct and solve problems. Responsible for performing a limited amount of patient testing. Performs established quality control procedures to check the accuracy and validity of test results. Identifies unusual test results that can be erroneous results; takes appropriate action to make corrections and solve problems. Follows appropriate safety protocol to include standard precautions, sharps handling, facility safety program, use of personal protective equipment in designated areas, and performs proper hand washing techniques. Maintains adequate supplies for all phlebotomy and specimen procurement procedures ensuring work area is adequately stocked.
