The incumbent serves as a Nursing Assistant (NA) at the Sioux Falls, South Dakota VA Medical Center. The NA provides support and direct patient care to Veterans and uses knowledge and skills to complete assigned duties with supervision by the Registered Nurse. Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Assist with care of acutely ill and more complex patients. Makes observations of subtle changes in patient's condition and reports to registered nurse. Observes patients for appropriate oxygen administration and performs pulse oximeter readings. Assists the nurse or provider with wound care. Reinforces patient teaching. Participates actively in mandatory reviews, unit meetings and in-services. Manages indwelling urinary catheter bags; emptying recording and reporting urine output to the nurse. Performs and records blood glucose monitoring and reports finding to nurse. Provides 1:1 sitter coverage. Obtains and records temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respirations, pulse oximetry, height, weight and I&O. Performs delegated EKG's Removal of heparin lock and urinary catheter based on competency. Ensures correct placement of O2 via nasal cannula/mask. Exchange oxygen tanks without adjusting oxygen LPM. Transports patients to tests and procedures as directed. Assists in monitoring and documentation of restraints as directed. Maintains and stocks supplies on the unit as directed. Demonstrates skill/knowledge/ability to perform treatments, procedures and the use and reprocessing of reusable medical equipment appropriate to assigned duties. Other duties as assigned Work Schedule: Various shifts including: 6:45 am to 7:15 pm, 6:45 am to 3:15 pm, 10:45 am to 7:15 pm Position will work weekends, holidays and possibly various night shifts due to staffing and census needs. ****NOTE: Salary listed does not include weekend, holiday and night pay shift differential. Shift Differential for employees who perform work during regularly scheduled hours between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. shall receive 10 percent of basic pay for those hours. Premium pay equal to 25 percent of the employee's basic hourly rate of pay is given for hours worked between midnight Friday or midnight Sunday. Employees who are required to perform regularly scheduled non-overtime work on a designated holiday shall receive pay at the rate of two times their hourly rate for actual hours worked on their tour, but not less than at least two hours.
