This position is under the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service. The position is that of Lead Medical Technician for Accessions/Inpatient Phlebotomy; Fee/Drug Testing; and Outpatient Laboratory, which oversees the accessioning area and phlebotomy support for the wards, the phlebotomy support for the outpatient laboratory area, the send out of specimens to referral laboratories and the collection of employee drug screens. Provides guidance and technical direction for accomplishing the work of this section. The Lead Medical Technician assigns staff to achieve optimum patient care and timely delivery of specimens. Ensures the work assignments of employees in the team are carried out. Works with the Supervisor in the assignment of functions to team members in order to meet routine and unusual deadlines and priorities. Ensures that pending lists are routinely checked to ensure timely resulting. The incumbent receives patients for medical laboratory testing collects specimens and evaluates tests for processing determination. Advises the professional staff on Medical Center and lab policy and testing matters. Performs patients care procedures such as collection of lab specimens. the proper collection and handling of various specimens including venous blood. The incumbent is responsible to ensure compliance with established directive and protects the confidentiality of the patient's medical records to prevent adverse publicity of the Veterans Administration. Assist in validations throughout the laboratory including validation of ancillary testing analyzers. The incumbent prepares specimens to be sent to outside laboratories, including reference and sharing laboratories, for testing not done at this Medical Center.
