How would you like to become a part of a team providing compassionate care to Veterans? The Health Technician (Dietetic) is a team member located in the Nutrition Communication Center (NCC). The incumbent is responsible for handling patient meal service orders in person or by answering patient calls using the facility phone system and may enter meal orders into a COTS Dietetics Software system. The incumbent will interact with veterans, dietitians, nursing staff, and other medical center employees. This position will also collaborate with Dietitians regarding Food/Drug Interactions, notifying clinical staff of potential issues with meal service and delivery and taking direction regarding management. The NCC is staffed to receive patient meal orders and preferences, meal and nourishment requests from nursing, clinical staff, and other members of the interdisciplinary team during all hours of meal service operations, seven days a week. Prints, prepares and reviews meal tickets according to local facility procedures. Triages calls from inpatient units or outpatient clinics and procedure areas relating to patient meal trays or nourishments at the lowest level and will refer issues that cannot be resolved to Food Service Supervisor or other as determined by local policy. Retrieve computerized information/printouts to assist with tray and/or nourishment assembly such as standing orders, nourishment labels, tabulated recipe lists, and other simple information to assist in meal delivery. Makes referrals to dietetic technician and/or dietitian as needed for more thorough diet education. Complete quality monitors to ensure food items and menu selections for regular and therapeutic diets are prepared and served appropriately Assists patients in selection of the proper foods according to their individual diet. Uses communication skills to converse with veteran's to accurately take menu orders via COTS (Commercial Off the Shelf) Dietetic software System. Has working knowledge of diet principles, such as carbohydrate counting for meal planning. Conducts new-admit patient rounding to introduce and discuss, menu available food items and ways to order meals with patients and residents. Conducts meal rounds on units after tray delivery to ensure patient satisfaction and provides service recovery and meal corrections when needed. Transfers patient menu preferences accordingly and keeps NCC stocked with all supplies needed and files menus. Incumbent handles routine telephone inquiries from nursing units/nursing personnel regarding patient meal orders Follows local policies and procedures for calorie counts, maintaining of call records and other food service-related functions Ensures supplemental feedings are correctly entered. Prints lists, reports, labels, and tray tickets following the established local facility procedures. Prints and assembles tray ticket packets in accordance with local facility policies and procedures and verifies correctness of the information Completes all other duties as assigned.
