The Outpatient Surgical Clinic Technician is assigned to the Outpatient Surgical Clinics of the Surgery Service. The functions of the assigned areas are to evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients with various suspected or previously diagnosed diseases, provide continuity of follow-up, and carry out appropriate treatment. He/she will be responsible for retrieving historical, clinical and diagnostic data. The incumbent is required to have a broad range of knowledge of the complete anatomy and is involved in virtually all aspects of clinical operations. He/She supports physicians and other medical professionals by using diagnostic instruments, equipment and accessories, and operates diagnostic and therapeutic medical instrumentation and equipment as a part of patient diagnosis and treatment. The Outpatient Surgical Clinic Technician must have a working knowledge and skill to provide technical support to the section within the clinic and also to assist with any administrative and scheduling functions. The incumbent ensures that adequate quantities of clinical supplies are available to meet workload demands through a systemized process of ordering, receipt and inventory control. The incumbent assists with training and orienting new technicians in clinic and at times, other surgical sub-specialties. The incumbent assists in instructing other technicians and patient care staff on specialized tasks and new/modified procedures and policies. The incumbent helps to coordinate the repair and installation of sub-specialty equipment and at times serves as the liaison between outpatient surgical specialty sections and Biomedical Engineering and repair contractors. He/she must track and maintain records of repair histories and vendor performance, monitoring work performance by contractors and in-house services assuring satisfactory completeness. The incumbent operates, calibrates and maintains medical instruments and/or equipment (including electrosurgical units, ultrasound devices, etc.) used in the performance of all outpatient clinical procedures, serving as the technical expert in the operation of this highly specialized equipment. The incumbent understands and helps to provide guidance in the scheduling of exams and procedures so as to minimize wait times while maintaining flexibility for emergency cases. The technician will, on a daily basis, review the next day schedule to ensure that all laboratory, x-ray or special procedures are ordered to ensure that maximum clinical efficiency is maintained. The incumbent provides technical, specialized assistance to surgical staff in the diagnosis or treatment of patient illnesses or medical conditions in both outpatient and OR settings. He/she performs direct patient support work to include collecting information from patients, providing personal patient care and educating patients on pre-testing, procedure and post-procedure activities. During clinical procedures, the technician supports physicians and other medical professionals in using therapeutic and/or surgical support instruments, equipment and accessories. The incumbent ensures test results are brought to the attention of the physician, made part of the permanent medical record, and maintains departmental files (administrative and medical). The technician sets up specialized equipment for procedures, setting technical factors, adjusting for patient anomalies, sets operation parameters for equipment, verifies alarms are set within parameters, etc. The technician will independently use hot and cold packs, performs simple and complex dressing changes utilizing aseptic technique and in accordance with the doctors' orders, cares for patients and sets up for treatments that require auxiliary equipment. The technician prepares the procedure site by cleansing and clipping according to physician or procedure requirements, maintaining Infection Control policies.
