This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application. Learn more The incumbent serves as a semi-specialist in medical technology with responsibility for performing procedures in the areas of Microbiology, Serology, and Micro-Molecular testing. This Medical Technologist rotates with other Microbiology Medical Technologists/CLS on a regular basis through the above-mentioned areas. Duties include but not limited too: Evaluates the suitability of the specimen for analysis, requesting new specimen if determined to be unusable. Prepares specimens for analysis, ensuring that the physiologic state of the specimen properties is maintained. Follows established protocol for handling of mislabeled/unlabeled specimens. Selects, performs, evaluates and monitors the performance of test procedures using manual and/or instrumental techniques in accordance with established protocols. Recognizes and reacts to indicators of malfunction; locates and implements corrections. Conducts quality control procedures on equipment, reagents, and products and maintains proper records for quality control reports, including initial quality control of all incoming reagents, kits and supplies. Follows IQCP guidelines for applicable tests. Conducts verifications and validations for new equipment, reagents, or tests brought into the department. Reports back to supervisor or designee on progress and issues. Performs initial testing on all reagents received in Microbiology and Serology before reagents are put into use. This includes lot to lot testing, parallel testing that must be acceptable and approved before reagents/supplies can be put into use.
